Creating dashboards and alarm rules from the asset's detail page
For convenience, from an asset's detail page (Dashboard tab and Alarms → Rules tab, if enabled for your role) you can create or edit dashboards and alarm rules without having to go to Settings → Asset Templates.
Even though you're on a single asset's page, the dashboards and alarm rules you create or edit here are saved at the template level, not on the individual asset. This means the change automatically applies to every other asset using the same template.
The interface shows a banner indicating how many assets will be affected by the change, before you confirm it.
Why it works this way
Dashboards and alarm rules are part of the template's definition (see What a Template is): they're meant to be shared by every product of the same type. Creating/editing them from an asset's page is just a shortcut — the end result is identical to doing it from Settings → Asset Templates.
Who can do this
Only users with the Admin role see the controls to create/edit dashboards and rules. Support users can open the Rules tab read-only, but can't edit it.
When to use this shortcut
- When you're investigating an issue on a specific asset and want to quickly create a dashboard or rule tailored to that kind of data, without leaving the context.
- When you want to preview the effect of a new dashboard on that asset's real data while building it.
If instead you want to manage templates, dashboards and rules without the context of a specific asset, use Settings → Asset Templates directly.
